About
I am a clay artist who guides my materials and then follows them where they want to go, from raw clay to organic sculptures with serendipitous results.
I explore organic and minimalist forms with my sculptural and abstract vessels. Sitting at the intersection of art and function, each piece is handcrafted with its own personality. I love the contrast between dark and light clay, and glazed and raw surfaces. The scritches and scratches of my tools and fingertips on finished clay speak a simple truth. Art models life with its raw beauty, flaws, mis-timed events, (good) accidents, learning, and growth.
Around 2000, I started working with clay, studying with artist Eve Margo Withrow. Since then, I’ve practiced the art of working with coils and slabs. I embrace the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, where imperfections, asymmetry, and simplicity are valued. My inspiration comes from everywhere: rocks, mountains, the female form, the sky. Nature’s rounded and irregular surfaces often appear in my work.
Cycling between soft white clay, gritty red clay, and even grittier black stoneware clay, I find that the differing characteristics of each clay body push my work in new, often unexpected directions. An ancient symbol of evolution, the spiral is my signature. Early on, I carved a stamp from clay and still use the image to sign my pieces. It reflects an appreciation for the natural world while imparting a sense of simple joy.
